Question 43

Is the Statue of Liberty Lucifer?

Fittest Flat Earther (141,000 subscribers) made a short video asking whether the Statue of Liberty is really a statue of Lucifer (“Statue of Liberty or Lucifer???”). He puts it next to a painting of Lucifer from 1797, Sir Thomas Lawrence’s “Satan Summoning His Legions,”, standing in the same pose with the same raised torch. Lucifer means “light bearer,” and the statue’s real name is “Liberty Enlightening the World.” He asks whether that’s even a woman’s face, and points out that New York is called “the Big Apple”, the city with a giant statue of the one who tempted Eve. His point is that the people running things put it right in your face and make evil look beautiful.

Some of this is history. The statue was a gift from France in 1886, the sculptor Frédéric Bartholdi was a Freemason, and the cornerstone of the pedestal was laid in a Masonic ceremony in 1884. That fits what Aren’t we all God? says about Freemasonry. The face and the pose are his own read. He ends the video saying it was “pure entertainment”, so take it as a question to think about, not proof.

The comments caught two things worth knowing:

  • It wasn’t an apple. Genesis says “she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat” (Genesis 3:6). It never says what kind.

  • God hates statues people bow to. “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image... Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them” (Exodus 20:4-5).

The evidence, piece by piece

Even an occultist who loves Lucifer, MorgueOfficial (781,000 subscribers), made a whole video saying the statue is Lucifer. He’s deceived by the very spirit he’s praising, but he and the commenters on both videos lined up the evidence:

  • The torch. Lucifer means “light bearer,” and the statue’s official name is “Liberty Enlightening the World.”

  • The crown. It has seven spikes, like rays of light.

  • The broken chains. In art Lucifer is often shown chained, and broken chains lie at the statue’s feet. It even made The Joe Rogan Experience. Eddie Bravo pulled up a famous painting of Lucifer with a shackle and a broken chain on his ankle, then the shackle and broken chain at the foot of the statue: “look at that right there.”

  • The face. It looks neither clearly male nor female, the way occult writers describe Lucifer. On Rogan’s show they zoomed in: “dude’s hand, dude’s arm, dude’s face, dude’s nose.”

  • The copper. The statue was shiny copper before it turned green. Copper is the old alchemy metal for Venus, and Venus is the morning star that Latin calls “lucifer,” as one commenter pointed out. Another noticed the statue faces southeast, where Venus rises as the morning star.

  • The sun god. Commenters saw Helios and Apollo in it. The poem on its plaque is even called “The New Colossus,” after the Colossus of Rhodes, a giant statue of the sun god Helios. Helios is shown with a crown of seven rays, and the Colossus stood about 108 feet, close to the statue’s height from feet to crown. Alpha Talkz also points to the sun god Mithra, and to the Masonic writer Albert Pike, who called Freemasonry the heir of the ancient Mysteries. The channel Vitrioli says Bartholdi wanted it to look like the Colossus of Rhodes in the form of an Egyptian woman. Before New York, Bartholdi really had pitched a giant robed woman holding a torch for the Suez Canal in Egypt.

  • The Tower of Babel. Vitrioli also says the Freemasons designed it to represent the Tower of Babel, built by Nimrod, whom old Masonic writings honor as a master builder, and that the base was made to look like a Babylonian ziggurat. Nimrod’s kingdom began at Babel (Genesis 10:10), and Babel was man trying to reach heaven without God: “let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name” (Genesis 11:4).

  • The queen of heaven. Others saw Ishtar or Semiramis, the “queen of heaven.” God called that worship out by name: “the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven... that they may provoke me to anger” (Jeremiah 7:18).

  • The star fort. The statue stands on Fort Wood, an old fort built in the shape of a star.

  • The Masons. Bartholdi was a Freemason, and so was Édouard de Laboulaye, the man who proposed the gift in 1865. When the cornerstone was laid in 1884, the Grand Lodge of New York ran a full Masonic ceremony: the stone was tested square, level and plumb, the Grand Master struck it three times, and they poured out corn, wine and oil.

  • The hidden hand. The hidden hand is a common Freemason symbol for allegiance to them. Commenters under Alpha Talkz’s video pointed out that Bartholdi posed with it: “The sculptor with his ‘hidden hand.’ Nuff said!”

  • The Lucifer statue. One commenter compared it to “Le Génie du Mal,” the 1848 statue of Lucifer in Liège, Belgium. It sits inside a Catholic cathedral, St. Paul’s, with a chain on his ankle, and commenters under the Rogan clip say there’s an apple at his feet too.

  • The official story. On paper the statue is Libertas, the Roman goddess of liberty. That’s still a pagan goddess holding up the light.

The comments under the occultist’s own video said it best. “Yeshua is the light. Lucifer cannot create but only imitate.” “Anything secret is not of our creator.” And an anglerfish carries a light too, and uses it to bait its prey. Under the short version of his video, one comment got more likes than almost any other: “Lucifer gives you freedom, the freedom to sin, and sin leads to death.” That’s Romans 6:23: “the wages of sin is death.” When a comedian’s podcast laughed at the idea, the comments under Alpha Talkz’s answer quoted the Bible back: there “shall come in the last days scoffers” (2 Peter 3:3). Another pointed to Psalm 37: “The Lord shall laugh at him: for he seeth that his day is coming” (Psalm 37:13).

One comment with hundreds of likes asked the real question: “One nation under God. The question is, under what god?” The replies answered it. Freemasonry calls God “the Great Architect of the Universe,” a title that fits any god, so men of any religion can stand in the same lodge under it. The God of the Bible gave His name and won’t share it: “I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images” (Isaiah 42:8). A man who used to be an atheist wrote that after Christ found him, “the scales that prevented me from seeing fell away and I’m convinced that you can’t be a follower of Christ and a Freemason.” Paul asked it the same way: “what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial?” (2 Corinthians 6:14-15). “Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14).

Are Lucifer and Satan the same?

People in the comments argued about this. Some said Lucifer and Satan are two different beings, and one asked where the Bible ever says they’re the same. Follow the verses:

  • Isaiah 14:12 is the fall of Lucifer: “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!”

  • Jesus said who fell from heaven: “I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven” (Luke 10:18).

  • Ezekiel 28 speaks to the king of Tyre, then describes someone no human king ever was: “Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God... Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth... Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee” (Ezekiel 28:13-15). The one in Eden was the serpent.

  • Revelation names the serpent: “that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth” (Revelation 12:9).

The fallen one, the one in Eden, the serpent, the devil and Satan are the same being. Splitting them into a “good” Lucifer and a “bad” Satan is the occult’s idea, not the Bible’s.

“Jesus is Lucifer. Revelation 22:16 says so.”

One commenter claimed that in the oldest Latin, Revelation 22:16 reads “I am Lucifer.” It doesn’t. The Latin Vulgate says “Ego sum radix, et genus David, stella splendida et matutina,” which means “I am the root and the offspring of David, the bright and morning star.” The KJV says the same: “I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.” The name Lucifer belongs to the one who fell: “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!” (Isaiah 14:12).

“Lucifer wasn’t evil. He offered us knowledge.”

Another commenter said Lucifer was punished for offering knowledge. What he actually offered was a lie: “ye shall be as gods” (Genesis 3:5). Jesus called him “a liar, and the father of it” (John 8:44).

Real liberty

The torch in New York isn’t where freedom comes from. Jesus read Isaiah 61:1 about Himself: He came “to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound.” “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed” (John 8:36). “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” (2 Corinthians 3:17). The occult has its own idea of liberty, and Alpha Talkz ties it to the same false light: Aleister Crowley’s motto, “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.” God’s liberty points the other way: “ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another” (Galatians 5:13).

Say it like this

“Look at what it’s holding: a torch. Lucifer means light bearer. It wears seven rays like the sun god Helios, it has broken chains at its feet, and Freemasons proposed it, built it and laid its cornerstone. Even an occultist who loves Lucifer says it’s him. God said, ‘my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.’ Real freedom isn’t a torch in a harbor. ‘If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.’”
